The Northwest Film Center is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, Oregon Arts Commission, Oregon Cultural Trust, Washington State Arts Commission, Regional Arts & Culture Council, The Ted R. In partnership with local arts councils and other arts, education, and industry partners, the Center works to develop media arts audiences and opportunities for artists and organizations. In addition to its exhibition and teaching opportunities for regional artists, the Center circulates traveling exhibition programs featuring work by regional artists to other arts presenters throughout the Northwest administers media arts fellowship programs conducts the regional jurying (West Coast) of the Academy Student Film Awards serves as a fiscal agent for independent producers in need of non-profit sponsorship offers low-cost equipment access to community producers and offers a variety of consulting services. The program also serves teachers and school districts through curriculum development consultation and through partnerships with colleges and universities. The Film Center's statewide Young Filmmakers Program, now in its 27th year, places professional media makers in school and community group settings throughout Oregon for hands-on learning experiences in film/video and animation production. Film Center faculty members are working artists who devote a portion of their professional lives to teaching and who combine craft with artistic vision in their approach. ![]() The Film Center's School of Film curriculum in filmmaking, video production, animation, and screenwriting serves those who wish to develop their personal vision as a film artist, offering classes and workshops which emphasize media aesthetics in a hands-on context. Annual film festivals include the Portland International Film Festival (February), an invitational survey of new world cinema the Northwest Filmmakers' Festival (November), a juried showcase of new work by regional artists and the Young People's Film Festival (July), featuring new work by student media makers from throughout the Northwest. Thematic series, special retrospectives, and visiting artist programs highlight major contributions to the art form. The Film Center conducts an active year-round exhibition program of foreign, classic, experimental, and independent works which showcase a wide array of regional, national, and international cinema and video art. The Center provides a variety of film and video exhibition, education, and information programs primarily directed to the residents of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Alaska.
